Influence of American Institutions on Information Systems (IS) Research within Asia

As the world continues to become more globalize, so must the academic community and the research being conducted. The current study evaluates the influence of the western academic community on research in Asia. The process for developing knowledge is evaluating along with the contributions of diversity within theoretical development. Research to date has displayed a strong influence from western academia despite an increase in the number of researchers publishing in international journals. To further expand the creation and sharing of knowledge, the current study makes several recommendations to advance the international academic community. By increasing the number of talented researchers at universities in Asia, conducting research relevant in local contexts, and developing Asian journals to match quality standards and recognition of western journals, the global academic community can create an environment where knowledge sharing is multi-directional. Research in Asia will continue to have an influence from western academia and western research can equally benefit and be inspired from theories being developed in Asian context.
